Hungarian Grenadiers (Austria)

Hungarian Grenadiers fought in the Austrian army of the 18th century and were deliberately selected for their physical size and stature. They had to have a good throwing arm, being able to propel a grenade far enough that it wouldn't kill them! The unit was a strong addition to the Austrian army, and a prized possession for any General on the battlefield. The Grenadiers were an impressive sight as they wore a beautiful and unique uniform. They were initially recruited for life, but towards the end of the century, men were able to sign up for shorter periods to attract an even better calibre of recruit.

Swiss Guards (France)

The Swiss Guards fought for the French nation and were the prized palace guard of Louis XVI. Wearing resplendent bright red uniforms and carrying smooth bore muskets they were a better calibre of light infantry than most of their opponents. By being recruited from the Swiss nation they avoided being involved in the conspiracies of French society and remained loyal to the French monarch. Historically during the revolution the Guards put up such a fight protecting the emperor that eventually a statue of a lion was erected in their honour. A tough, capable and well trained heavy infantry unit that can stand its ground in the face of terrible odds, the Swiss Guards are a fantastic addition to any commander's army.

Gardes du Corps (United Provinces)

Dressed in splendid uniforms and riding heavy horse these royal bodyguard soldiers specialised in almost unstoppable charges and benefit any army with a high morale and solid combat discipline. Drawn from the upper classes of the nation they are often unliked by the regular citizenry and are somewhat arrogant, but with good reason. As a last line of defence or massive heavy charge, these splendid royal units are an invaluable elite addition to any Netherlands army.

Bosniaks (Prussia)

Prussian Bosniaks are an irregular mounted soldier on light horse capable of a devastating charge. These riders are historically mercenary in nature hailing from the Balkans as their name suggests. They fight with a passion and zeal as they were often paid in plunder! They can be overly aggressive and are very effective against units on the move or static infantry formations. These horse riders are best used in crushing hit and run attacks, committing them for long periods can expose their lack of discipline, so a keen General will use them to smash an enemy, and then retreat before repeating the charge. An excellent elite addition for the tactician who can utilise them to the full.

Professional scoundrels, they are particularly effective against soldiers that organised Prussian infantry find difficult to counter. Drawn from criminals, deserters and other ner-do-wells, they are a flexible light infantry force capable of strong ambushes and raids. Although detested by Prussian nobles, their need was never questioned. An elite band of brigands capable of tipping battles in the right generals hands.

Siemenovski Foot Guards - Russia

These elite line infantry were far better equipped than their standard brothers and a touch more arrogant too. With splendid uniforms and far better trained they made excellent garrison soldiers, punishing popular decent harshly. They also struck fear into enemies on the battlefields of Europe as their training meant they would often hold their nerve where lesser infantry would break. Their solid equipment, proud demeanour and high level of training make these a strong backbone to any land military advance for a Russian General.
